5 Common Myths About Dogs

Dogs are the most popular choice of pets in the UK. However, despite the fact that dogs are the most common form of pet ownership, there are many myths and misconceptions that exist regarding dogs.

Here are the 5 most common myths about dogs, which we have completely debunked.

1. You can leave your dog in the car as long as the temperature is cool.

No, no, no – never do this, even if you are only popping out of the car for a couple of minutes. This is because heat rises inside a vehicle very quickly regardless of the temperature. Leaving your dog in the car is like putting your dog in a hot oven – it’s dangerous. If you are popping out for a short while and your dog is present, take your dog with you and leave him or her outside on a lead.

2. A dog’s mouth is as clean (or cleaner) than a human’s mouth.

Like humans, a dog’s set of teeth is susceptible to tartar build-up and bacteria, so a dog’s dental hygiene regime (including brushing every day and taking him or her for a checkup) should always be high priority.

3. Dogs are colourblind.

Dogs are not colourblind. They can see some colours, but they find it hard to distinguish between them. If anything, dogs are better at sensing movements.

4. Dogs get plenty of exercise in the garden.

Unless you ensure that your dog keeps on moving, then chances are they are not getting a sufficient amount of exercise. Like humans, dogs need regular exercise so it is important to keep him or her fit and active on a regular basis. Take him or her for physical activities, such as walking in the park or swimming.

5. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

We’ve all heard the saying “You can’t teach an old new tricks”. However, that is not strictly true – of course you can teach an old dog new skills, and they can always learn new things! Here at the Dog School, we offer dog training in Croydon to pooches of any age – young and old!

"I recently asked Dog School to help train my new puppy which was completely untrained. After the training she is now far better behaved and most importantly house trained! Would recommend to others."
