VOLUNTEER TO LOOK AFTER A GUIDE DOG PUPPY

Dog School Ltd. is happy to publicise a unique opportunity for Croydon animal lovers. Willing volunteers will get the chance to play a vital role in the early stages of a guide dog puppy’s development.

The volunteers will get the chance to develop their animal care skills, whilst introducing the puppies to the sights and sounds of the London area.

The lucky volunteers will walk the dogs, give them a home and care for them, full-time, between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 months.

At the 1 year mark, the dogs will begin their formal guide dog training, in earnest.

As reported in the Croydon Guardian, Hilary George, a regular puppy walker, is currently looking after her eighth guide dog for the blind.

Hilary first entered into the world of dog walking after her own dog sadly passed away. “I really didn’t want to go through the bereavement of losing another dog again. Having the pleasure of training a guide dog puppy, that would go on to become someone’s ticket to independence, really appealed to me”.

The company involved in this scheme is Guide Dogs London. Their Volunteer Development Co-Ordinator, Pippa Block said “As a volunteer, you will prepare the pup for their working life, by taking them on public transport, including trains, the tube and buses”.

“You will need to have access to a car, be based at home most of the day, and have a yard or garden that is securely fenced, so that the puppy remains safely within its confines”.
